Colonial America: The Massachusetts general court passes the first copyright law on this day in 1672. Colonial bookseller John Usher is issued the first copyright for his publication The General Laws and Liberties of the Massachusetts Colony. This will be in force for seven years with a heavy fine for violation. American Independence: On this day in 1776 the Virginia delegation to the Continental Congress receives authorization by its colonial assembly to support Independence. American Suffrage: Elizabeth Cady Stanton is elected President of the National Woman Suffrage Association which had recently been formed by activist women on this day in 1869. Fueled by disparate political successes nationally in the form of voting rights and election to public office in several states the group decides to press for voting rights at the federal level.
