On March 4th, 1857 photographer John Wood took a four second exposure of President James Buchanan giving his inaugural address on the front of the Capitol. He had been experimenting with the process anticipating the inauguration with experimental materials to enable him to use a speedier process for his image. In the upper left hand corner of the photograph one can make out the construction taking place on the future dome of the Capitol building.
